Based on the standards and organizations that you have found related to the learning environment that you are creating, do you think that your environment will map to the expectations within a subset of that larger organization and its needs?
I have been studying and teaching architectural drawings for the last 25 years. I also studied fine arts, photography and printmaking.
WhenI started architecture school computers were not common practice for producing drawings, back then architectural drawings were prouduced by hand and considered an art. Students learned how to draw by observing more experienced teachers. There was no line between art and architecture so I learned how to look at best of drawings and learned great techniques to make clear and strong architectural drawings that convey ideas, feelings and personal style. Each architect and designer had their own signature line types methods of typing words and private language that if enhanced that reflected their experience and training.
Then in 1994 I took an AutoCAD class. I was very disappointed in the quality of drawings the computer produced the drawings felt very mechanical they lacked the spirit and the personal human touch. At same time, The software was very powerful and fast especially when it's used for large projects with multiple people at the same time. it is agreat tool for production. But the final product was flat and everyones drawings looked exactly the same. Still myself and a few of my colleague architects wanted to tame this technological monster and keep the quality of drawings that were familiar with. We tried to integrate old ways of drawing by hand with new software capabilities.
Currently as teacher, I teach technique of architectural drawings to our juiot college student. Our college mission is to produce graduates that can join the workforce and make better lives for themselves. At the same time the field is crowded, and students who have special abilities and have portfolios to show the skill will have a better chance of finding gainful employment. I hope i can encourge my students to be great visual communicators and have wesites to show samples of their own work.
How is “learning” or training done in a conventional sense within this field – and what would you like to bring to the field that has not been do ne or was not achievable in the past?
Must most technical drawing classes focus on teaching the students the software the commands and have the students copy of mechanical drawings without digging deep into the software. I'm finding ways to make the final product artistic expression. I want them to have portfolios that show invoation and that they can incluede in their job applications.
I think exposure to quality pieces of art can always elevate the viewer and give them a new measuring stick. It is a very challenging and hard task to put quantitative meaures on art. I inspire the students to do artwork that they can represent themselves with pride.
Are there other comments and notes that you want to make about your personal learning and/or the challenges that will lie ahead as you start thinking about the expectations that you might have of your future learners?
I find it hard to teach the material I need to cover in such a short time. Also it would be very helpful if my student can go the field and understand the built environment better.
The mastery of hand hand tools requires being fully there. I have to give the studnets enough time to be in hte moment and find the joy of creating art.
